The Challenge
The owners of this 3-bedroom apartment on Al Reem Island wanted to modernize their home with smart lighting and automated blinds. With large floor-to-ceiling windows facing the waterfront, managing natural light and glare was a daily frustration — especially in the west-facing living room during afternoon hours. They were also tired of manually adjusting lights across multiple rooms and wanted preset scenes for different activities.
Our Approach
Lighting Automation
We replaced all standard switches with smart light switches across the apartment's 10 circuits. Each switch supports dimming and can be grouped into scenes. We configured four primary scenes:
- Morning — gradual brightening in bedrooms, full lights in the kitchen
- Daytime — minimal artificial illumination, relying on natural light
- Evening — warm ambient tones in living areas, dimmed corridors
- Goodnight — all lights off except a soft nightlight in the hallway
Scenes activate automatically based on time of day, with one-tap overrides available on wall panels and smartphone.
Motorized Blinds
Six motorized blind motors were installed on the apartment's main windows. The blinds integrate with the automation system to coordinate natural and artificial light. During peak afternoon sun, the west-facing blinds close automatically to reduce heat and glare, then reopen as the sun moves. Morning routines include the bedroom blinds opening gradually alongside the wake-up lighting scene.
Results
- Seamless daily routines — lights and blinds adjust automatically throughout the day
- Reduced glare and heat — automated afternoon blind closure keeps the apartment comfortable
- 16 devices installed in one day — professional installation with no disruption
- One-app control — all lights and blinds managed from a single interface
- Energy savings — smarter use of daylight reduced daytime electricity consumption by approximately 20%
