The Challenge
Our client was renting a 2-bedroom apartment in JBR and struggling with high DEWA bills during the summer months. With AC units running around the clock, their monthly electricity costs were exceeding AED 1,200. As a renter, they couldn't make permanent modifications to the apartment — no rewiring, no drilling into walls, and no changes that would affect the security deposit.
They needed a solution that would make their AC usage smarter without requiring landlord approval or leaving any trace when the lease ended.
Our Approach
Wireless AC Controllers
We installed wireless IR-based smart AC controllers on each of the three AC units — two in the bedrooms and one in the living area. These compact devices attach to the wall with adhesive strips, requiring zero drilling or permanent mounting. Each controller communicates with the existing AC unit via infrared, giving full remote control through a smartphone app.
Smart Scheduling & Geofencing
We configured automated schedules aligned with the client's daily routine. The AC in the bedrooms powers down 30 minutes after the typical wake-up time and pre-cools 20 minutes before bedtime. Geofencing was set up so that all units switch to energy-saving mode when both residents leave the apartment and begin cooling before they return home.
Temperature-Based Automation
A wireless temperature sensor placed in the main living area triggers the AC to maintain a comfortable range rather than running continuously at a fixed setting. This alone eliminated hours of unnecessary cooling each day.
Results
- 30% reduction in DEWA bills — monthly costs dropped from AED 1,200 to approximately AED 840
- Zero modifications to the apartment — fully removable installation, no impact on security deposit
